Kingsville District High School
Kingsville District High School students and the community held a Pride Flag Raising Ceremony on Monday, June 6, 2016 at Kingsville District High School to recognize June as Pride Month 2016. This will be one of the first schools to raise the Pride Flag since the motion passed for all secondary schools at the Greater Essex District School Board back on April 19, 2016.
The Pride Rainbow Flags were donated by the Windsor-Essex Pride Fest to all schools and organizations participating in Pride Month 2016.
Mrs. Bailey from Windsor Pride gave a great address describing the reasons, history, significance of the colours and personal testimony to an assembled group of KDHS students from the GSA, vocal class, tech and extended French program who were 'free' at 10:00 this morning. MANY press were there, including justice reporter Sarah Sacheli from the Windsor Star. Principal Salinitri also introduced Kevin Bailey, a KDHS alum who graduated in 2003? who travelled from Toronto with his husband Chris. (Mrs. Bailey is Kevin's mom). Kevin spoke eloquently about how he was mercilessly bullied as he came out to his family in 2000 when he was 15. Many of his family were present and he raised the flag. An 'Oprah full circle moment' he called it. HUGE pride in Kingsville! . The GSA members talked about how they see the Harrow DHS GSA adding to their social justice initiatives and Mrs. DelCastro? GSA teacher sponsor was beaming.
My day started with KDHS (wonderful - lots of kids & community & media) , on to LDSS, (heartfelt GSA messages read aloud + County Student Trustee Pena + brand new Canadian & Rainbow flags flying... then to take pics at HDHS ... full afternoon (and evening) of meetings - and home to the county (for another function) just before sunset to see this lovely image. It's the early morning after a wonderful day - another big day today/tomorrow : Happy Pride!
